With a background in dance, DJ Shugga (aka Kelly Barrett) had the beats, rhythm and movement down, so becoming a DJ and producer was such a natural progression.
With her unique blend of Nu-school, electro, and funk, Shugga has been droppin\' the tracks all over the U.S and Canada since 1997. Getting her start on the East Coast, playing out at clubs from Connecticut and Boston to Pennsylvania and New York to the Carolinas and Florida, put Shugga in the midst of the dance music revolution. Spending a few years working at Satellite Records in New York also helped expose this new talent to many more aspects of music.
Shugga was invited to join the inaugural “Caffeine Culture Spring Breaks Tour 2000” that traveled all over Florida, North and South Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee. In addition to Shugga, the four-month outing, featured Dave Trance, Huda Hudia, and Stew. As well as opening countless doors, Shugga was invited back to many of the places that she was featured. With this new-found exposure, she was voted 2nd sexiest person in breaks for 2001 in a poll given by Skoolfish Productions in the UK.
DJ Shugga’s first single, “Shugga, Sugar,” came out on fledgling indie, Funk Dawg Records in April, 2002. “Bitch Slap”, a Groovy electro Funky-break featuring vocals from Shugga, and produced alongside of Mike Robinson, was completed just in time for her performance at the annual 2002 Winter Music Conference.
Since her WMC debut in 2002, Shugga has been keeping busy, on the road, in the studio and is working on a new compilation cd with world wide distributions and cable tv advertising, going to PuertoRico to play as well In between gigs, Shugga can be found in the studio working on new tracks for her debut artist album, “Coast to Coast”. DJ Shugga is quickly becoming one of the ladies to watch in the US Breaks scene. Keep your eyes peeled!
