BIOGRAPHY

Libby Picken has been singing ever since she can remember. Growing up, some of her favorite musicians included and ranged from Madonna and Deee-Lite, to Soulstice, Zhane, and Erykah Badu. She has publicly performed classical Broadway show tunes such as ‘Think Of Me’ from Phantom of the Opera, and ‘On My Own’ from Les Miserables. She currently receives vocal instruction from a nationally accredited opera singer, who is also a voice instructor at the respected Peabody Institute.
In 1998, DC producer Holmes Ives(Music Now, Caffeine); also known as Memnon and Aurora; was the first person to give Libby a shot in the studio. Unfortunately, the sessions only resulted in the use of vocal snippets, and Libby’s now infamous moans and sighs. The products included ‘Exit 9'(with Michael Meacham, on Caffeine, released 1999), and Promethun Groove remix (original by BT, released on Music Now in 1999) as well as a few others. It was a little over a whole year before Libby was given another opportunity to showcase her vocal talents in another’s studio.
It was at the 1999 Ultraworld Thanksgiving party where Libby met DC house producer James Brennan(www.loopjunkie.com, Stickmen Records - Toronto). Having many mutual friends, it was inevitable that the two of them would discuss their musical endeavors, before eventually collaborating. In February of 2000, James came to Libby with a new song that he had written, and which he thought would suit her voice. The final product was a garage-y sounding track entitled ‘Burning Bridges’, which was an instant local hit. ‘Burning Bridges’ is currently unreleased and available for licensing. Libby and James have completed work on another track, ‘Thorn’, in December 2001, which is also unreleased and available for licensing.
Through Libby’s constant involvement in the club and rave scene, she was quite fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and chat with many world renown producers. In late Spring of 2000, Libby met Detroit techno producer Alan Oldham; AKA DJ T-1000; while working for Family Productions at their event, ‘Believe’. This meeting eventually led to them working on their track, ‘Abstraction’, which is currently unreleased and available for licensing.
In the Summer of 2000, while helping out Buzzlife productions, Libby met drum and bass producer John B, owner of the incredibly successful UK label, Beta Recordings. After hearing her work with James Brennan, John expressed an interest in collaborating on a track with Libby. In April 2001, Libby wrote the pop-infused drum and bass song, ‘Electrofreek’, for John B. ‘Electrofreek’ was released in 2003 on Beta Recordings UK, and was also featured on the November 2002 issue of Mixmag’s cover CD, in which Mixmag described the track as ‘apocalyptic’. ‘Electrofreek’ can also be found on John B’s latest mix CD entitled ‘Brainstorm’, as well as on Paul Oakenfold’s newest mix CD, ‘The Great Wall’.
Hanging out with her buddy; breakbeat, house music producer, and Juice Recordings label owner; Wes Smith at the 2001 Winter Music Conference, led her to meet breakbeat producers DJ Moon and DJ Trashy from Lafayette, Louisiana, both Juice Recordings artists. Shortly thereafter, in Summer of 2001, both DJ Moon and DJ Trashy requested Libby’s vocal talents on multiple tracks that they had been working on. Libby completed work with DJ Moon on two cover tunes, entitled ‘Running’, and ‘Sitting On Top Of The World’, which are currently unreleased.
