Gianna Tomas LaVarda (The Vixen)
“Her name has become synonymous with the South East US dance music scene, and a legitimate competitor in the industry as a headlining artist.” – Dustin Michael
Welcome to the world of Gianna’s aggressive progressive.
Gianna LaVarda experienced her first “party” back in 1994; she was instantly attracted to this new realm, and the music drove its way into her soul. The feelings, thoughts, and ideas that arose from deep within were too great to ignore; she found it necessary to share this with the rest of the world.
Born in Madison WI in 1977, Gianna was surrounded by music from the start. Her father was a musician/songwriter and her mother an artist/songwriter. She began her musical journey as a violinist. She has since moved to Nashville, where she discovered the electronic music and “rave” scene in 1994. Inspired by the music of Sasha and Digweed as Northern Exposure, Nick Warren and others, she began exploring the art of mixing vinyl in 1998. Initially, she was emotionally drawn to epic trance. Then, as her skills and selections matured, she moved forward into a more progressive and deeper sound with more garage bass, low pass filters, and a little tech. However, she never lost the deeply spiritual and emotional roots that drove her in the beginning.
Gianna has since played prime timeslots all over the South East and Midwest US. From these performances and her strong reputation as a solid headlining DJ, she has received 3 write-ups in DMA Magazine and National recognition throughout the industry. Thanks to a loyal following of promoters and fans alike, she has been seen headlining huge shows and performing with such prestigious acts as Kimball Collins, Sandra Collins, Sean Cusick, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Mea, Andy Hughes, DJ Icey, Baby Anne, and Jason Dunne - Just to name a few. Also, Gianna recently showcased her skills at a massive US event beside Paul Oakenfold.
In the fall of 2000, Gianna landed her first residency at one of Nashville's most popular after hours spot - club Katatonic. From there, she moved her residency to the Nashville mega-club Outer Limit, where she handled all applicable promotions and business. After a long run with club residencies, she decided to focus her attention to her National career and promotions. Currently, she is involved with the business of the newly founded Downtown Nashville club Dream, along with the management of her DJ schedule; she has also recently joined the roster of the elite Nashville independent record label – the Experimental Division.
"It is easy to play an anthem track that really moves the crowd, but I would rather rock them with my ideas and my mixing. I have learned to be true to myself and play what moves me, instead of what I think the crowd wants to hear - Usually when I play what my heart and soul desires, it IS what the crowd wants to hear. I would rather walk away saying 'WOW - what a set!' than saying 'WOW - what a track'. – Gianna LaVarda
Her style is totally original; in her 5 years of mixing vinyl and performing, she has taught herself to use all genres of dance music to her advantage. These styles include deep driving trance, progressive tribal, galloping tech-house, garage bass breaks, and airy symphonic 4/4s. Her flawless and extended mixing technique initially began as her purpose, but now have become her trademark. For Gianna, track selection is just as important as skill
